Georgetown Walking Tours: Georgetown Heights

August 26, 2017 @ 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

Explore the neighborhood surrounding Dumbarton House! Meander through this historic neighborhood and let Dwane Starlin, member of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides, take you to the mansions, servants’ quarters and cemeteries of the apogee of Georgetown.

See the neighborhood the way Joseph Nourse – first resident of Dumbarton House– would have viewed it from atop Cedar Hill. The tour begins at the Mt. Zion Methodist & Female Union Band Cemeteries. These cemeteries provided the servants & slaves of the area with a resting place and also served as a station along the Underground Railroad System. Next the tour goes to Herring Hill, the nucleus of the commerce for slaves and servants during the nineteenth century, and to Rose Park which was created by residents during the late 1800s and still thrives today. Observe the smallest home in Georgetown, a stark contrast to the huge mansions nearby such as Evermay & the Washington-Beall House (former home of Katherine Graham). Montrose Park & Oak Hill Cemetery will also be on our route.
